“DRAFT DAY” ✮✮✮✮✮
“Draft Day” is the best thing Ivan Reitman has been responsible for since Jason Reitman! The film tells the story of Cleveland Browns general manager Sonny Weaver, Jr., brought to life with an epic performance by Kevin Costner. Sonny’s team is coming off another losing season, he’s mourning the death of his legendary father, and he just discovered his girlfriend is pregnant. To make matters worse, if Sonny doesn’t land the most highly coveted QB prospect in the NFL Draft, he’ll be out of a job. Talk about stakes!
Costner proves why he is the reincarnation of Jimmy Stewart, bringing the character of Sonny Weaver, Jr. to life with quiet excellence. Sonny is at the top of his profession and dedicated to doing a great job — the same thing can be said about everyone involved in the making of “Draft Day.”
The twists and turns of “Draft Day” are as exciting as the NFL Draft itself, and then some. Right when you think you know where screenwriters Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph are going with the story, they hit you with an unexpected plot twist that keeps you on the edge of your seat. But “Draft Day” isn’t all drama and twists. There are plenty of laughs, most of which are provided by iconic funnyman Denis Leary as the head coach of the Browns. Watching Leary and Costner trade verbal jabs is a thing of beauty!
“Draft Day” is easily the best sports drama ever made, making such cinema classics as “Rocky,” “Hoosiers,” “Raging Bull” and “Field of Dreams” look like the work of amateur filmmakers.
